MOORESVILLE, NC – Darek W. Haupt, 63, died unexpectedly in his sleep April 27, 2021 at home. He was born August 15, 1957 at Passaic General Hospital in Passaic, NJ, the son of Richard G. Haupt and Glenna G. Haupt.
Darek grew up in Peapack Gladstone, NJ and graduated from Bernardsville High School, class of 1975. He was a multi-sport athlete and champion pitcher. He later graduated from Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, NY, class of 1987 with honors. Although he could make foods from many ethnicities, he specialized in Italian cuisine and cheffed at many elite restaurants from Naples, FL to Baltimore, MD to Montclair, NJ and Cape Cod, MA. He found acclaim at Nauset Beach Club in East Orleans, MA where his creations earned the restauranteur an award as the #3 restaurant on Cape Cod. He founded Mama Yolanda’s Traditional Sauces, LLC in 2014 and was joined in this business by his mother and brother Brad in 2019. Wherever he lived, Darek was active in his local church and remained faithful to the end. He was always the most gregarious person in any room and was loved by many.
He was predeceased by his father, Aunt Joanie Garniss and niece Crystal Haupt. Surviving him are his fiancée Catharine Place of Mooresville and her triplets, Gabby, Josh and Logan as well as his mother and brothers Richard G. Haupt, Jr of Easton, PA. and Bradford C. Haupt of Mooresville, two nephews, three nieces, two grandnephews and three grandnieces.
A service of remembrance was held 5:00 PM, Sunday, May 2 at J.B. Tallent Funeral Service and Crematory, 1937 North Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, NC 28205. It will be livestreamed on the funeral service Facebook page for family and friends who are interested but unable to attend.
